She served as under secretary of energy in the Obama administration and earlier was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Vivien Casagrande was a research professor of cell and development biology, a professor of ophthamology and visual sciences, and a professor of psychology at Vanderbilt University. She had taught at Vanderbilt since 1975.

Dr. Casagrande joined the faculty at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1975. She was promoted to full professor in 1986. She also served as an investigator in the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and the Vanderbilt Brain Institute.
