Berenecea Johnson Eanes Will Be the First Woman President of California State University, Los Angeles

Berenecea Johnson Eanes has been chosen to serve as president of California State University, Los Angeles. When she takes office in January, Dr. Eanes will be the ninth president of the university and the first woman to hold the post.

“I am honored to join this outstanding university and its vibrant and diverse campus community,” Dr. Eanes said. “I look forward to engaging and collaborating with Cal State LA’s talented students, staff, and faculty to continue the institution’s journey to new heights in student success, research, scholarship and creative activity, and community engagement.”

California State University, Los Angeles enrolls nearly 23,000 undergraduate students and more than 3,700 graduate students, according to the most recent enrollment numbers furnished to the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 58 percent of the undergraduate student body

Since 2020, Dr. Eanes has served as president of York College of the City University of New York. She served as vice president for student affairs at California State University, Fullerton from 2012 to 2019. Earlier, Dr. Eanes was vice president of student affairs at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York.

Dr. Eanes is a graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans. She earned a master’s degree at Boston University and a Ph.D. in social work at Clark Atlanta University.
