In Memoriam: Lucie S. Kelly, 1925-2019

Lucie S. Kelly, professor emerita at Columbia University in New York City, died late last month in Charlottesville, Virginia, She was 94 years old.

A native of Germany, at the age of 4 Dr. Kelly came to the United States with her parents and settled in Pittsburgh. She held a bachelor’s degree in nursing, a master’s degree in nursing education, and a Ph.D. in higher education, all from the University of Pittsburgh.

Professor Kelly taught at California State University, Los Angeles before joining the faculty at Columbia University in New York City. She had a joint appointment as professor of public health and nursing in the School of Nursing and professor of public health and associate dean of academic affairs in the School of Public Health. She retired from Columbia in 1990.

Dr. Kelly held six honorary doctorates from the University of Rhode Island, the University of Massachusetts, Georgetown University, American University, the State University of New York, and Widener University.
