Study Finds No Biological Gender Differences in Brain Function of Children Regarding Mathematics
The research team used functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the brain activity in a group of young children ages 3 to 10 while the children were watching an educational video covering early math topics. After numerous statistical comparisons, the research team found no difference in the brain development of girls and boys.

During World War II, Dr. Hooker became the first Black woman to serve on active duty with the United States Coast Guard. She used her G.I. benefits to fund her graduate education at Columbia University and the University of Rochester. Professor Hooker served on the faculty at Fordham University in New York from 1963 to 1985.

In Memoriam: Virginia Lee Maxwell George, 1924-2018
Professor George joined the faculty at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in 1964 as an instructor of maternal and child nursing. In 1975 she founded the school’s nurse practitioner graduate program and served as director for 15 years.

A Persistent Gender Gap in Authorship of Papers Published in Key Scientific Journals
The research found that fewer than 25 percent of Nature research articles listed women as the first author — usually the junior scientist who led the research. Among last authors — typically the senior laboratory leader — just over 15 percent were women. Other journals had similar percentages of women authors.
