Virginia Sisiopiku Recognized for Excellence in Transportation Engineering Education

Virginia Sisiopiku, professor of engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has received the 2024 Excellence in Transportation Engineering Education Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers. She was honored for her outstanding commitment to educating future leaders in the transportation engineering field.

For more than two decades, Dr. Sisiopiku has taught in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s department of civil, construction, and environmental engineering. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in transportation, and serves as an advisor for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty members.

As an academic, Dr. Sisiopiku’s interests include traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems, congestion management, traffic operations and safety, simulation and modeling, and sustainable transportation. She currently conducts research as the founder and principal director for the university’s Transportation Engineering and Development Laboratory.

Dr. Sisiopiku received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago.
