President of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York Is Stepping Down

Robin L. Garrell, president of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, has announced that she will step down from her post at the end of September. She has served as president since August 1, 2020.

Dr. Garrell had come under fire in August for the hiring of Marc Lamont Hill as the Presidential Professor of Urban Education at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Professor Hill has been criticized for his remarks relating to the state of Israel.

Before becoming leader of the Graduate Center, Dr. Garrell had served as vice provost of the Graduate Division at the University of California, Los Angeles. In addition to her administrative duties, Dr. Garrell joined the faculty at UCLA in 1999 and had been a professor of chemistry since 2003 and a professor of bioengineering since 2013. She previously taught at the University of Pittsburgh.

A native of Detroit, Dr. Garrell earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a Ph.D. in macromolecular science and engineering from the University of Michigan.
