Amy Kristof-Brown was appointed dean of the College of Business at the Univerity of Iowa. Camellia Okpodu was appointed dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wyoming and Adrian Parr will be the next dean of the College of Design at the University of Oregon.
Banu Subramaniam Wins Book Award From the Society for Literature, Science & the Arts
Banu Subramaniam, a professor in the department of women, gender, sexuality studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has won the 2020 Michelle Kendrick Memorial Book Prize. The Kendrick Prize is open to any book of original scholarship on literature, science, and the arts.

The four women earning promotions at Bates College are Geneviève Robert in the department of earth and climate sciences, Meredith Greer in mathematics, Sonja Pieck in environmental science, and Therí Pickens in the English department.

Lynda Wiest, professor of mathematics education and educational equity at the University of Nevada, Reno, received the Willystine Goodsell Award which recognizes educators who support women, girls, and education through scholarship, activism, or community building.

The Nationwide Gender Gap in College Graduation Rates
For all students who enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs at NCAA Division I institutions in 2013, 67 percent earned their degrees by 2019. When we break the figures down by gender, we see that 70 percent of women earned their degrees within six years compared to 64 percent of men.
Madeline Pumariega Will Be the First Woman President of Miami Dade College
In her most recent role, Pumariega has been serving as executive vice president and provost at Tallahassee Community College in Florida. Pumariega was appointed as the first woman and first Hispanic chancellor of the Florida College System in 2015.
Study Claims That Early-Career Women Scientists May Do Better If They Have a Male Mentor
A study published on the website of the journal Nature Communications by researchers at the Abu Dhabi campus of New York University concluded that “opposite-gender mentorship may actually increase the impact of women who pursue a scientific career.” The paper has created a firestorm in academic circles.
Waded Cruzado is the New Chair of the Board of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities
Dr. Cruzado has been president of Montana State since January 2010. Prior to coming to Montana State, Dr. Cruzado served as executive vice president and provost at New Mexico State University. She served as NMSU’s interim president from 2008-2009. She also served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at NMSU from 2003 to 2007.
Examining the Gender Gap in Credits Earned in High School Career and Technical Education
In 1992, there was a 0.64 credit advantage for male students compared to women students in CTE courses in business fields. By 2013, women had erased this deficit and held a slight advantage over men in CTE business credits earned.
Marsha Gable Selected as the New Leader of Grossmont College in El Cajon, California
Dr. Gable has been serving for the past five years as vice president of student services at Grossmont College. She served for eight months in 2019 and 2020 as interim president of San Diego Miramar College. Earlier, Dr. Gable was dean of counseling services and admissions and records at Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego, California.

After earning degrees in chemistry at MIT and Oxford Univerity, Dr. Wagley began her teaching career at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She later taught at Johns Hopkins University and Goucher College, both in Baltimore.
Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership Established at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
The Center’s academic focus will include producing innovative and theoretically grounded research and creating a data center on issues of women and gender. J. Jarpa Dawuni, an associate professor of political science at the university, was named director of the new center.

Kate McIntyre, an assistant professor of creative writing at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, is the winner of the 2020 Flannery O’Connor Award. The award, named after famous short story writer and novelist Flannery O’Connor, was established by the University of Georgia Press in 1983.

Elaine Sullivan Brings to Life the History of the Egyptian Necropolis of Saqqara
Dr. Sullivan won the Roy Rosenzweig Prize for Innovation in Digital History, sponsored jointly by the American History Association and the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. The award is given annually to honor and support work on an innovative and freely available new media project.

Cheri Canon Honored by the American Association for Women in Radiology
Cheri Canon, the Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been selected to receive the 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award from the American Association for Women in Radiology. The award is the association’s highest honor.
University of Illinois Hires Three Women for Its President’s Distinguished Faculty Recruitment Program
In 2018, the University of Illinois System announced the three-year, $60 million President’s Distinguished Faculty Recruitment Program to hire distinguished faculty across a wide range of disciplines. The three women recently hired under the initiative are Ana P. Barros in civil and environmental engineering, Bernadette Sánchez in educational psychology, and Lesley Sneed in civil engineering.
Does Funding for State Universities in Oregon Have a Gender Bias?
A new study led by Jacqueline Strenio, an assistant professor of economics at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, finds that public funding of state universities in Oregon favors academic programs and universities with higher percentages of men.
Karen Carey Is the New Chancellor of the University of Alaska Southeast
Dr. Carey has been serving as interim chancellor since June. Previously, she was provost and dean of graduate studies at the university. Earlier in her career, Dr. Carey served in dean positions at California State University, Channel Islands and California State University, Fresno.
New Study Aims to Determine How to Boost the Number of Women Academics in Management Information Systems
The researchers will collect data identifying barriers to women’s advancement in academic careers in management information systems, including promotions and tenure. They will also craft policies to recognize women’s contributions to the field of information systems and conduct training on recognizing gender bias in the discipline.
Christina Paxson Elected Board Chair of the Association of American Universities
Founded in 1900, the Association of American Universities is composed of 65 of America’s leading research universities that receive about three-fifths of all federal research grant funds. Dr. Paxson has served as Brown University’s nineteenth president and a professor of economics and public policy since July 1, 2012.
University of Massachusetts Study Finds Most Women Are Not Receiving Proper Postpartum Care
According to a study led by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, most women are receiving fewer than half the services recommended during their comprehensive postpartum medical checkup. In one of the most startling findings, despite an increased awareness of perinatal depression, only one in 11 patients received a screening for depression.
Lena Hill Will Be the Next Provost at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia
Dr. Hill currently serves as dean of the College and professor of English and Africana studies at the university. Prior to joining Washington and Lee, Hill was associate vice president and interim chief diversity officer at the University of Iowa, where she was an associate professor of English and African American studies.
