In Memoriam: Alice Billings Thompson Clark, 1926-2020

Alice Billings Thompson Clark, the former vice president for academic affairs at the University of North Dakota, died last month. She was 94 years old.

A native of Oneida Station, Idaho, Clark grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in 1947. She later received a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from Brigham Young University in Provo Utah.

Before her career in higher education. Dr. Clark taught in the third grade. She moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota, in 1965 and joined the faculty at the University of North Dakota. When she was later named vice president of academic affairs, Dr. Clark became the first woman to hold a high-level administrative post at a university in North Dakota.

After her retirement in 1992, Dr. Clark went on to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England, New Zealand, Oklahoma, Singapore, and China.

The Alice T. Clark Faculty Mentoring Program at the University of North Dakota is named in her honor.
