Carol Johnson-Dean Will Be the New Leader of LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis

Carol Johnson-Dean has been named interim president of LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis. Dr. Johnson-Dean will begin her interim role on August 26, 2019.

The college enrolls just under 900 students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. Women are nearly 70 percent of all enrollments.

Dr. Johnson-Dean has been serving as executive director of the Memphis chapter of New Leaders, a nonprofit organization that develops educators’ leadership skills. She previously served as superintendent of Memphis City Schools from 2003 to 2007 and Boston Public Schools from 2007 to 2013. She was the first woman superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools. She held that post from 1997 to 2003.

“I am humbled at the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead for the college, and I look forward to working with faculty, students and community partners in this critical endeavor,” said Dr. Johnson-Dean

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, where she majored in elementary education. She holds a master’s degree and doctorate both from the University of Minnesota.
