In Memoriam: Grace Steinberg Day, 1926-2016

Grace DayGrace Day, the only woman in the 1949 graduating class at University of South Dakota School of Law, died on July 13 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was 89 years old.

After graduating with 175 men, Day opened a law practice in Missouri in 1950. For 30 years, she was the only woman attorney in the city but was elected president of the St. Joseph Bar Association. She also was named Woman of the Year by Missouri Law Weekly. Day retired in 2013, although she remained active as a court appointed volunteer until shortly before her death.

Day was the daughter of Polish immigrants and was born in Onawa, Iowa, where her parents owned the local shoe store. She completed undergraduate work at the University of South Dakota before entering the law school.

A 30-minute documentary on this pioneering woman entitled Amazing Grace, recently was produced and shown at the law school.
