In Memoriam: Anna Bethel Young, 1918-2014

Anna Bethel Young, author and long-time educator in both the public schools and at the college level, died on August 10 at an assisted living facility in Haverford, Pennsylvania. She was 96 years old.

After graduating from Temple University in 1946, Dr. Young became one of the first African American teachers in the public school system in Philadelphia. She taught at both junior and senior high schools in the city. While teaching, she earned a master’s degree at Temple University.

After raising two children, Dr. Young furthered her education by earning an educational doctorate at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She taught at Cheyney University, The Lincoln University, the College of New Jersey, and Temple University.

Dr. Young was the author of the books Relationship of Writing and Self-Esteem Among Urban High School Students and A Grandmother’s Quest: Aah, You Made It.
