Arizona State University Official Is Confirmed as the First American Indian Woman Federal Judge

Diane Humetewa, who has been serving as special adviser to the president for American Indian affairs and a professor of practice in the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, has been confirmed by the United States Senate as the first American Indian woman to serve as a federal district court judge. She will step down from her university posts to serve in the federal district court of Arizona.

Earlier in her career, Humetewa was the first American Indian woman to be named a U.S. attorney. She is a native of Arizona and a member of the Hopi tribe.

Humetewa holds a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from Arizona State University.
