In Memoriam: Norene Alys Smith, 1929-2014

Norene A. Smith, the inaugural assistant dean of women at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, died on April 17 in Kindred Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. She was 84 years old.

A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Dr. Smith was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College. She held a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from what is now the University of Northern Iowa, and a doctorate in counseling and student development from the University of Iowa.

After teaching physical education in the public schools in Davenport, Iowa, she joined the administration at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1961 as assistant dean for women. Later she was the inaugural director of the university’s Counseling and Testing Center. She retired in 1985 as professor emerita and associate dean of students.
