In Memoriam: Barbara Jacobson, 1939-2014

Barbara-JacobsonBarbara Jacobson, an assistant professor of sociology at Lehman College of the City University of New York, died earlier this month. She was 74 years old.

Dr. Jacobson’s research focused on education and social mobility, using the huge dataset of the student body at the City University of New York. At Lehman College, she also served as chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.

A graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, Dr. Jacobson earned a master’s degree in the sociology of religion from Yale Divinity School. In 1970, she earned a Ph.D. in sociology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Soon afterward, she joined the faculty at Lehman College.
