Woman Wins Pregnancy Discrimination Case Against Wayne State University

wsuTina Varlesi, a former graduate student in the School of Social Work at Wayne State University in Detroit, won a $849,000 award from a jury in a discrimination lawsuit.

While at student at the school Varlesi had an internship with the Salvation Army. Varlesi claimed that a supervisor gave her a bad review because she did not approve of the fact that she was an unmarried woman and was pregnant. The bad review prompted the school to drop her from the master’s degree program.

The university stated that it is reviewing its options for an appeal of the verdict.
