Leading Sorority Joins Effort to Fight Against Sexual Assault

JYellFireJust Yell Fire, a nonprofit organization combating violence against women and girls, has announced a new Campus Life Safety and Self Defense program in conjunction with the 154,000-member Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. Just Yell Fire was founded at Vanderbilt University six years ago. It now has more than 1 million members in 66 countries. The program seeks to train women to defend themselves when they are attacked.

Under the agreement with Alpha Omicron Pi, the sorority’s 123 campus chapters and 147 alumnae chapters will conduct  self-defense classes. Women will view a film on avoiding and fighting back against sexual assault, see live demonstrations, and get handouts showing self-defense techniques and other information on date-rape drugs, relationship violence, and common sense campus safety tips.
