In Memoriam: Colleen J. McElroy, 1935-2023
In 1983, Dr. McElroy became the first Black woman to serve as a full-time faculty member at the University of Washington. From 1995 to 2007, Professor McElroy served as editor of The Seattle Review, a literary magazine based at the university.
In Memoriam: BeEtta L. Stoney, 1959-2023
Dr. Stoney joined the Kansas State community in 1999 as a race equity coordinator and technical consultant with the College of Education’s Midwest Equity Assistance Center. She was subsequently hired as an assistant professor of secondary education with the college in 2000 and was promoted to associate professor in 2005.
Dr. Stoney served as Kansas State’s faculty athletics representative for 13 years from 2010 to 2023.

Leela Prasad Selected to Lead the American Academy of Religion
Dr. Prasas will serve as vice president, president-elect, and then president of the academy. She will be the fourth Asian American woman and the third faculty member from Duke’s department of religious studies to lead the American Academy of Religion in its 113-year history.

Lynne M. Holden was named senior associate dean for diversity and inclusion at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. Rana Johnson was appointed the inaugural vice president for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at Kansas State University and Jenn Hunter was named chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer for the Big 12 athletic conference.

Kim McCuistion is currently dean of the Fort Worth campus of Tarleton State University. She joined Tarleton in 2018 as chief of staff after 11 years with Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

In Memoriam: Ann Elizabeth Fennema, 1928-2021
Dr. Fennema served as a professor of education at the University of Wisconsin. Her scholarly interests focused on two main themes: gender issues related to mathematics, and teachers’ cognitions as they influence instruction and learning.
Clemson University Scholar Sruthi Narayanan Honored for Her Work in Crop Science
Dr. Narayanan received the Crop Science Society of America Early Career Award. This award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in crop science within seven years of completing their final degree. Dr. Narayanan is the first Indian woman to receive the CSSA Early Career Award.
Charlotte Morris Appointed the Ninth President of Tuskegee University in Alabama
For over three decades, Dr. Morris has served in several roles at Tuskegee University including chief of staff to the president and secretary to the board of trustees. Most recently, Dr. Morris served as the director of the university’s Title III program.
Melinda Anderson is the New Leader of NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising
Dr. Anderson currently serves as the interim associate vice chancellor for student success at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. NACADA, with approximately 15,000 members in 35 countries, is housed in the College of Education at Kansas State University.
Christine Johnson McPhail Is the New President of Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina
Dr. McPhail has been serving as a professor of practice at the John E. Roueche Center for Community College Leadership at Kansas State University. Earlier, she was director of the Community College Leadership Doctoral Program at Morgan State University in Baltimore and president of Cypress College in California.

Dr. Dale was a native of Kansas and grew up on a cattle farm. She rode a horse to her high school, where she was the valedictorian of her graduating class. Dr. Dale had a long career in higher education at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Hawaii.
Wendy Wintersteen to be the First Woman President of Iowa State University
Dr. Wintersteen first joined the faculty at Iowa State in 1979. In 1989, she left briefly to serve as director of the National Pesticide Education Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Since 2006, she has served as dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State.
