Four Women Announce Their Retirements From High-Level Posts in Academia

Judith M. Cole, executive vice president and CEO of the Alumni Association at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is stepping down from her post on June 30. She has led the alumni association at the university for the past eight years.

Cole is a graduate of the University of Colorado, where she majored in business administration. After working in the banking industry for six years, she returned to the academic world to earn a master’s degree in public and private management at the Yale School of Management.

Karen M. Sowers, dean of the College of Social Work and the holder of the Alvin and Sally Beaman Endowed Professorship at the University of Tennessee, announced that she will retire on August 15. She has led the College of Social Work for the past 20 years and currently is the longest-serving dean at the university.

Professor Sowers is a graduate of the University of Central Florida in Orlando, where she majored in sociology. She holds a master of social work degree and a Ph.D. in social work from Florida State University.

Iris Rosa, the inaugural director of the African American Dance Company at Indiana University in Bloomington will retire in May after 40 years at the university. She also serves as a professor and director of undergraduate programs for the department of African American and African diaspora studies.

Rosa has appointed director of the African American Dance Company at the university in 1974. She holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s degree in dance from Indiana University.

Catherine C. Scroggs, vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Missouri, is retiring on July 31. She joined the staff at the university in 1985 and has served as vice chancellor for the past 14 years.

Dr. Scroggs holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a master’s degree in counseling from Clemson University in South Carolina. She earned a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Missouri.
