University of Colorado Scholar Wins the Pulitzer Prize for History

FENNElizabeth A. Finn, an associate professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been selected to receive the Pulitzer Prize in History. Dr. Finn was honored for her book Encounters at the Heart of the World: A History of the Mandan People (Hill and Wang, 2013). The citation for the prize says that the book is “an engrossing narrative showing the Mandans, a Native American tribe in the Dakotas, as a people with a history.”

Dr. Finn’s research has focused on the spread of epidemic diseases among Native Americans. An earlier book was Pox Americana: The Great Smallpox Epidemic of 1775-82 (Hill and Wang, 2001).

Dr. Finn is a graduate of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University.
