Three Women Faculty Members Who Are Taking on New Assignments

Julia Steed will become the academic director of the family nurse practitioner program in the School of Nursing at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, effective August 1. Dr. Steed has been a member of the family nurse practitioner faculty since 2017. She specializes in internal medicine/primary care and is trained to deliver evidence-based interventions for smoking cessation.

Dr. Steed is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University. She earned a master’s degree in nursing and a Ph.D. in nursing science from Vanderbilt University.

Nanfu Wang, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, will join the faculty of New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute as a Distinguished Journalist in Residence. Wang, whose appointment in the news and documentary program begins in the fall of 2023, will teach courses, including a newly created class, “Reporting in Closed Societies/Communities.” She has won two Peabody Awards, a George Polk Award, and a MacArthur Genius grant.

Born in a farming village in China’s Jiangxi Province, Wang holds a master’s degree in English Literature from Shanghai University), a master’s degree in media studies from Ohio University, and a master’s degree in documentary filmmaking from New York University.

Susan Richmond, an associate professor of art history and the associate director of the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design at Georgia State University, will become the interim associate dean for the College of the Arts, effective July 1. She will serve as interim dean for the 2023-24 academic year. Dr. Richmond joined the Georgia State faculty in 2003. Her research and teaching focus on material histories of art and visual culture in the United States since 1945, with a specific emphasis on feminist historiographies and the intersections of art, gender, and labor. She is the author of Lynda Benglis: Beyond Process (Bloomsbury Visual Arts, 2022).

Dr. Richmond holds a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Texas at Austin.
