Women Make Up More Than Three Quarters of All Teachers in K-12 Schools

A new report from the U.S. Department of Education offers statistics on the K-12 teacher workforce in the United States. The report found that 76.6 percent of the nation’s teachers in K-12 schools are women, while only 23.4 percent are men. Women are 76.8 percent of public school teachers and 75.3 percent of private school teachers.

Women make up nearly 90 percent of all teachers in elementary schools. Women are 72.4 percent of middle school teachers and 59 percent of high school teachers.

Women make up 72 percent of all teachers in small schools with less than 100 students. Whereas, women are 64.6 percent of all teachers in schools with more than 1,000 students.

In private schools, women are 89.7 percent of all teachers in elementary or middle schools. In private high schools, women make up 55.6 percent of the teacher workforce.
