Five Women Who Are Stepping Down From Their Posts in Higher Education

Susan Cole, the eighth president of Montclair State University in New Jersey, announced that she will step down at the end of the academic year. She is the first woman to serve as president of Montclair State. Dr. Cole became president in 1998. Earlier, she served as president of Metropolitan State University in Minnesota, from 1993 to 1998.

Dr. Cole is a graduate of Barnard College in New York City. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English and American literature from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Linda D. Norman, dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and the Valere Potter Menefee Professor of Nursing, announced she will step down on June 30, 2021. Dr. Norman has served as dean since 2013 and spent nearly 30 years in various academic and administrative roles at Vanderbilt.

Dr. Norman earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Virginia. She holds a doctorate in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Theresa McBride, professor of history at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, has retired. She is an expert in modern French and Italian history, with research interests in the comparative history of women and gender, as well as global environmental history.

A member of the faculty since 1973. Dr. McBride holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Judi Henry, the longtime executive senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Texas Tech University, has announced her retirement after 40 years serving her alma mater in various capacities. Henry will remain in her current position until December. Before joining the athletics department in 1997, Dr. Henry served as dean of students at the university.

Dr. Henry earned a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and an educational doctorate from Texas Tech University.

Mary Galvin, the William K. Warren Foundation Dean of the College of Science and a professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame, will step down from the position effective December 31. She has served as dean since August 2015.

Professor Galvin earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Manhattanville College in Harrison, New York. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in polymers and materials science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
