In Memoriam: Mary Cornelia Spinks Weil, 1942-2018

Mary WeilMary Weil, the former managing editor of the University of Delaware Messenger, a magazine for alumni and other friends of the university, died on January 24 at a hospice facility in Pike Creek, Delaware. She was 75 years old.

A native of Houston, Texas, Weil began her higher education at the University of Texas but transferred and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and biology at the University of Oregon.

Weil worked in the public relations office at the University of Delaware for 24 years and retired in 2008 as the managing editor of the University of Delaware Messenger. During her tenure the magazine won awards from the National Federation of Press Women and the International Association of Business Communicators.

John Brennan, assistant vice president for communications and marketing at the University of Delaware said that “I’ll always remember her abiding respect for the importance of higher education, her invaluable candor, her lively wit, and her generous heart.”
