Two Women Scholars Appointed to Leadership Posts at Major Journals

Laura Sands, professor of gerontology in the department of human development at Virginia Tech, has been named editor-in-chief of the new journal Innovation in Aging. The journal is a digital, peer-reviewed publication published by the Gerontological Society of America.

Professor Sands said, “I’m excited to play a role in launching an open-access journal that will rapidly disseminate transformative, interdisciplinary research that addresses 21st-century issues in aging.”

Dr. Sands joined the faculty at Virginia Tech in 2014. Previously, she was the Katherine Birck Professor of Nursing and the director of research for the School of Nursing at Purdue University. She holds a Ph.D., master’s degree, and bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Korina Jocson, associate professor of education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, was named editor of Equity & Excellence in Education, the official journal of the university’s College of Education. The journal was founded in 1963. It is published quarterly by Taylor & Francis.

Dr. Jocson is the author of Youth Poets: Empowering Literacies In and Out of Schools (Peter Lang, 2008) and the editor of the book Cultural Transformations: Youth and the Pedagogies of Possibility (Harvard Education Press, 2013).

Dr. Jocson holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in language, literacy, and culture from the University of California, Berkeley.
