The Graduate Center of the City University of New York Names Its Next Provost

ConnollyJoy Connolly was named provost and senior vice president of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Since 2004, Dr. Connolly has been a professor of classics at New York University. She also has been serving as dean for the humanities.

Professor Connolly is the author of The State of Speech: Rhetoric and Political Thought in Ancient Rome (Princeton University Press, 2007) and The Life of Roman Republicanism (Princeton University Press, 2014).

In accepting the appointment, Dr. Connolly said that “I am honored to serve as provost at the hub of a renowned public university in one of the world’s greatest cities. The Graduate Center’s commitment to ensuring the most intellectually ambitious and inclusive community of scholars possible has energized every one of my conversations. At a time of great challenge and opportunity in higher education, I look forward with enthusiasm to working with everyone — faculty, administrators, students, and staff.”

Professor Connolly is a graduate of Princeton University in New Jersey. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
