The First Woman to Earn a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Miami

negin-arhamiNegin Arhami received a Ph.D. in computer science on December 17 from the University of Miami. She is the first woman in history to earn a Ph.D. in computer science at the university.

Dr. Arhami was born and raise in Tehran, Iran. She became interested in computer programming while in high school. After graduating from Amirkabir University of Technology in Iran with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in computer science, she came to the United States and earned a second master’s degree at the University of Miami.

Dr. Arhami’s recent doctoral dissertation was entitled “Automated Theorem Proving by Translation to Descriptive Logic.”

In discussing her experience at the University of Miami, Dr. Arhami said that “the computer science department is like a family. Everyone is so nice and supportive, and the department allows you to be very flexible with your schedule.”

Dr. Arhami will begin her career as a software engineer for Microsoft in Seattle, Washington.
