Bowdoin College Appoints Two Women to Endowed Professorships

Bowdoin_College_SealBowdoin College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Brunswick, Maine, has announced the appointment of two women to endowed chairs.

Elizabeth A. Stemmler was named the James Stacy Coles Professor of Natural Sciences. Dr. Stemmler has been on the college’s chemistry department faculty since 1988. She recently was awarded a grant to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the nervous system of lobsters.

Dr. Stemmler is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Jill-SmithJill Smith was appointed the John S. Osterweis Associate Professor of German. She has been on the Bowdoin College faculty since 2006. Dr. Smith is the author of Berlin Coquette: Prostitution and the New German Woman, 1890-1933 (Cornell University Press, 2013).

Dr. Smith is a graduate of Amherst College in Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Germanic studies from Indiana University.
