Yale University Names Two Women to Important Posts

Tamar Gendler, the Vincent J. Scully Professor of Philosophy at Yale University, was named the inaugural dean of the Faculty of the Arts and Sciences. She also serves as professor of psychology and cognitive science and as deputy provost for humanities and initiatives.

Professor Gendler joined the Yale faculty in 2006. Previously, she taught at Syracuse University and Cornell University. She is the author of Thought Experiments: On the Powers and Limits of Imaginary Cases (Routledge, 2000) and Intuition, Imagination, and Philosophical Methodology (Oxford University Press, 2010).

Professor Gendler is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale University. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Lynn Cooley, the C.N.H. Long Professor of Genetics at Yale, was appointed dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Science. Since 2001, she has served as the director of the Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Yale. Her research is focused on fertility.

Professor Cooley is a graduate of Connecticut College in New London. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Texas.
