The New President of the Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science

werner_washburneMaggie Werner-Washburne, Regents Professor of Biology at the University of New Mexico, is the new president of the board of directors of the Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). The nonprofit organization, headquartered in Santa Cruz, California, represents Hispanic/Chicano and Native American students, faculty, and professionals in scientific fields. The organization, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, has 6,000 members. There are 70 chapters of the organization at colleges and universities.

Professor Wener-Washburne is a graduate of Stanford University, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii and a Ph.D. in botany from the University of Wisconsin.
