In Memoriam: Noreen McGowan, 1914-2012

Sister Noreen McGowan, who served on the faculty of the School of Nursing at Saint Louis University for three decades, died late last month at her home in Bridgeton, Missouri. She was 97 years old.

Professor McGowan joined the faculty at the nursing school in 1953 and rose through the ranks from assistant professor to full professor. She served as chair of the department of nursing of children. When she retired as professor emerita in 1983, she was the last Franciscan Sister of St. Mary to serve on the nursing school’s faculty. She also served as director of nursing at the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medicinal Center in St. Louis.

Professor McGowan was a member of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Mary for more than 78 years. She held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Saint Louis University and in 1971 completed training at the university to become a nurse practitioner.
