In Memoriam: Anne Dhu McLucas, 1941-2012

Anne Dhu McLucas, professor of music emerita at the University of Oregon, was killed earlier this month in a double homicide near Eugene, Oregon. Police have arrested the son of her domestic partner, who was also killed in the incident, in connection with the case. Professor McLucas was 71 years old.

Dr. McLucas was a native of Denver, Colorado, and was a graduate of the University of Colorado. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in music at Harvard University.

Professor McLucas established the department of music at Boston College and also taught at Wellesley College, Harvard University, and Colorado College before joining the faculty at the University of Oregon. She was dean of the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance from 1992 to 2002. She served as president of the Society for American Music and The College Music Society.

Dr. McLucas was the author of four books, including her latest work, The Musical Ear: Oral Tradition in the USA (Ashgate, 2010).
