In Memoriam: Joan Callahan, 1946-2019
In 1986, Dr. Callahan joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky, where she taught philosophy for the remainder of career. There she was director of what is now the Gender and Women’s Studies Program from 1998 to 2002 and again from 2003 to 2007. She retired in 2011.
In Memoriam: Gellestrina DiMaggio, 1923-2018
Professor DiMaggio joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts as a nursing instructor in 1954. An expert in maternal-child nursing, she and three other women were the first faculty members in what later became the College of Nursing.
Dorcas Davis Bowles to Serve as Provost at Clark Atlanta University
Dr. Bowles served as provost at Clark Atlanta University from 2003 to 2008 and she served as dean of the university’s School of Social Work on three different occasions. Earlier in her career, Dr. Bowles was a professor and acting dean of the School of Social Work at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.

A new study by scholars at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, examined more than 46,000 complaints filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or fair employment practices agencies at the state level between 2012 and 2016. Some 68 percent of all employees who filed sexual harassment complaints reported some form of retaliation from their employers.

Bethami Dobkin is a professor of communication and provost emerita at Saint Mary’s College of California. She served for a decade as provost and vice president for academic affairs. She joined the faculty at Saint Mary’s College of California in 2008 after teaching for 18 years at the University of San Diego.

In Memoriam: Meredith Bragg Raymond, 1918-2018
Dr. Raymond joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1964 as a lecturer in the English department, specializing in Victorian literature. She was named an assistant professor two years later and was promoted to associate professor in 1970 and to full professor in 1986.
In Memoriam: Lynne Rudder Baker, 1944-2017
Dr. Baker joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 2009. She was promoted to Distinguished Professor of Philosophy in 2005 and retired in 2013.
In Memoriam: Lillian Rachel Goodman, 1923-2018
Lillian Goodman was a professor and dean of the Graduate School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She also founded the Department of Nursing at what is now Worcester State University in Massachusetts. That nursing department is now named in Dr. Goodman’s honor.
