In Memoriam: Olivia Juliette Hooker, 1915-2018
During World War II, Dr. Hooker became the first Black woman to serve on active duty with the United States Coast Guard. She used her G.I. benefits to fund her graduate education at Columbia University and the University of Rochester. Professor Hooker served on the faculty at Fordham University in New York from 1963 to 1985.

Study Finds Link Between Number of Women Students and Doctoral Completion Rates
A new study from Ohio State University has found that the fewer women who enter a doctoral program at the same time, the less likely any one of them will earn their doctorate within six years. When there is only one woman in a new doctoral class, she is 12 percentage points less likely to complete her degree within six years than her male classmates.
Educated Women Are More Likely to Get Married and Stay Married Than Women With Less Education
Dr. Yue Qian of the University of British Columbia found that the proportion of marriages in which the husband had a higher level of education than his spouse dropped from 24 percent to 15 percent and marriages in which the wife had more education rose from 22 percent to 29 percent between 1980 and 2012. Women with a higher level of education were more likely to get, and stay, married.
