In Memoriam: Hildred Storey Geertz. 1927-2022
Dr. Geertz taught at the University of Chicago from 1960 to 1970 before coming to the anthropology department at Princeton University in 1970. Professor Geertz was the first woman to chair an academic department at Princeton University and was only the third woman professor to be awarded tenure.
In Memoriam: Trudy Harrington Becker, 1961-2022

In Memoriam: Yvonne “Bonnie” Slatton, 1938-2202
Bonnie Slatton began her tenure in the then women’s physical education department at the University of Iowa in 1964, where she served as a faculty member and a coach of tennis and badminton. She earned a Ph.D. in physical education from the University of Iowa in 1970.
In Memoriam: Mary Ellen Reilly, 1941-2022
Professor Reilly joined the sociology faculty at the University of Rhode Island in 1973. During a 30-year teaching career, Dr. Reilly was one of the founders of the women’s studies program.

Her research focused on nineteenth-century American history and American women’s history. Dr. Seager retired in 2004 after teaching at Ball State for 38 years.

In Memoriam: Reaner Shannon, 1936-2022
Dr. Shannon began her career at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine as the main research lab technologist. In 1990, she left the lab to become director of the minority affairs office at the school, becoming the school’s first associate dean for minority affairs in 1998, a post she held until she retired in 2008.

Sarah Predock Burke Lupinski was a professor emerita of modern languages and literatures at Trinity Univerity in San Antonio, Texas. She joined the faculty at the university in 1973 and taught there for 38 years.
In Memoriam: Anne Bail Howard, 1927-2022
Professor Howard taught and directed the remedial English program at the University of New Mexico before joining the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno in 1963. She was the only woman on the English department faculty at that time. She taught at the university for 37 years and was instrumental in the establishment of the women’s studies program.

In Memoriam: Agate Nesaule, 1938-2022
Dr. Nesule, a native of Latvia, joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1963. There she was a co-founder of the women’s studies department and won many teaching awards. She retired from teaching in 1996 to concentrate on her writing career.
In Memoriam: Marilyn Louise Fogel 1952-2022
Professor Fogel pioneered the use of different forms of the same chemical element, called isotopes, to understand the life history of organisms, both modern and ancient. In so doing, she helped develop biogeochemistry as a new field of science with many seminal papers in the field and earned herself the moniker ‘isotope queen.’

In 1962, Sedgwick began working as the managing editor of the OSU College of Medicine Journal. During her tenure at Ohio State, she also taught journalism classes at Franklin University in Columbus.

In 1973, Dr. Lashof became the first female director of the State of Illinois Public Health Department. In 1970, Dr. Lewis joined the faculty at Scripps College in Claremont, California, where she was the first Black scholar to be awarded tenure. The Samella Lewis Collection of Contemporary Art was created by Scripps College in her honor in 2007.

Dr. Droessler began teaching at Meredith College in 2005 and taught through the spring 2002 semester. Earlier, Dr. Droessler served for more than 30 years as senior administrator for the arts for the Wake County School System.

Dr. Benkart joined the faculty in the mathematics department at the University of Wisconsin in 1974. She was only the second woman appointed to a faculty post in the department. She taught at the university for 32 years.
