Four Women Scholars Granted Tenure at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota

Macalester College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in St. Paul, Minnesota, has granted tenure to seven faculty members. Four of the seven faculty members granted tenure are women.

Zeynep Devrim Gursel is an associate professor of international studies at the college. She is a cultural anthropologist who authored the Image Brokers: Visualizing World News in the Age of Digital Circulation (University of California Press, 2016). Dr. Gursel is a magna cum laude graduate of Yale University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Rivi Handler-Spitz is an associate professor in the department of Asian languages and culture. She is the co-editor of A Book to Burn and a Book to Keep (Hidden) Selected Writings of Li Zhi (Columbia University Press, 2016). Her second book, Symptoms of an Unruly Age: Li Zhi and Cultural Manifestations of Early Modernity, is forthcoming from the University of Washington Press. Dr. Handler-Spitz is a graduate of Columbia University in New York City. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Chicago.

Andrea Kaston Tange is a professor of English at Macalester College. An expert of Victoria-era British fiction, Dr. Kaston Tange is the author of Architectural Identities: Literature, Domesticity, and the Victorian Middle Classes (University of Toronto Press, 2010). She is the former editor of the Journal of Narrative Theory. Dr. Kaston Tange is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Vermont. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Karen Velez is an associate professor of history, specializing in pre-1800 global history. Dr. Velez joined the faculty at Macalester College in 2011. She is working on a book with the title Catholic Landings in the Early Modern World: Jesuits, Converts and the Collective Miracle of Loreto. Dr. Velez is a graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in New Jersey.
