In Memoriam: Rachel Walton, 1947-2025

Rachel Walton, professor of criminal justice at Utah State University Eastern, passed away on February 1. She was 77 years old.

Over three decades before she transitioned to academia, Dr. Walton began her career in criminal justice in California. An expert in cold case homicide, she served as a reserve officer for the Arcata Police department, a patrol deputy for the Humboldt Sheriffs office, and an investigator for the Humboldt County Attorney’s office.

In 2007, Dr. Walton joined the faculty at Utah State University. During her tenure, she initiated and led an assessment of unresolved homicides in Utah between 1965 and 2005. She frequently lent her expertise to institutions across the United States and Canada, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Institute of Justice, and the Canadian Royal Mounted Police.

Dr. Walton earned her doctorate in organization and leadership from San Francisco State University.
