Women Own One-Fifth of Employer Businesses in the United States

The United States Census Bureau has recently released new data on the characteristics of employer businesses in America. The report, based on the 2023 Annual Business Survey, covers information on American businesses that had paid employees in 2022.
In 2022, there were roughly 5.9 million employer firms in the United States. About 1.3 million of these firms were owned by women, meaning women own 22.3 percent of all employer firms in the country. These women-owned businesses had an estimated $2.1 trillion in receipts over the course of 2022. Women-owned employer firms in 2022 employed about 11.4 million employees with an annual payroll of $508.5 billion.
