Yale University’s Beverly Gage Wins the Pulitzer Prize for Biography

Beverly Gage, a professor of 20th-century U.S. history at Yale University, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in the biography category. She was honored for her book G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century (Viking Books, 2022), a biography of former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.

The prize committee stated that the book was “a deeply researched and nuanced look at one of the most polarizing figures in U.S. history that depicts the longtime FBI director in all his complexity, with monumental achievements and crippling flaws.”

Earlier the book won the 2022 National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography, the 2023 Bancroft Prize in American History and Diplomacy, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Biography.

Dr. Gage also authored The Day Wall Street Exploded: A Story of America in Its First Age of Terror (Oxford University Press, 2009).

Professor Gage is a graduate of Yale University, where she majored in American studies. She earned a Ph.D. in history at Columbia University.
