Six Women Scholars Who Have Been Assigned to New Positions or Duties

Christine Kim Garcia, the Frode-Jensen Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, has been given the added duties of director of the Columbia Precision Medicine Initiative, a multidisciplinary effort launched in 2014 to accelerate the development of precision medicine and its use in clinical settings.

Dr. Garcia received a medical doctorate and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

Jamie Waters is a new associate professor of Old Testament studies in the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College. Before joining the faculty at Boston College, Dr. Waters taught for nine years in the department of Catholic studies at DePaul University in Chicago.

Dr. Waters graduated from Boston College with a double major in theology and philosophy. She earned a master’s degree in religion from Yale University and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Near Eastern studies with a focus in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Dana R. Fisher will join American University in Washington, D.C., as a professor in the School of International Service on July 1. She will also serve as the director of the university’s Center for Environment, Community, and Equity. Dr. Fisher has been serving as a professor of sociology at the University of Maryland. She is the president of the Eastern Sociological Society.

Professor Fisher is a graduate of Princeton University in New Jersey, where she majored in East Asian studies and environmental studies. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Caterina Scoglio, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Kansas State University, was named a university distinguished professor. She joined the faculty at Kansas State in 2005. She is an expert in the field of network science and contact-network models for epidemic spreading.

Dr. Scoglio earned a Ph.D. in engineering from Sapienza University in Rome, Italy.

Ann Marie Stanley has been appointed director of the School of Music in the College of Arts and Architecture at Pennsylvania State University, effective July 1. She has been serving as associate dean of graduate studies in the College of Music and Dramatic Arts at Louisiana State University. Earlier, she was an associate professor of music education at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music from 2007 to 2016.

Dt. Stanley holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in oboe performance from Wichita State University in Kansas. She earned a Ph.D. in music education from the University of Michigan.

Sanya Carley was named Presidential Distinguished Professor of Energy Policy and City Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, with an appointment in the department of city & regional planning and an affiliation with the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. She will hold secondary appointments in the department of business economics and public policy at the Wharton School and at the School of Social Policy & Practice. Dr. Carley has been serving as an O’Neill Professor at the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and associate vice provost of faculty and academic affairs at Indiana University.

Professor Carley is a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in economics and sustainable development. She holds a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Ph.D. in public policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
