In Memoriam: Christine M. Cano, 1962-2022

Christine M. Cano, an associate professor of French at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, died on December 29 after suffering a fall earlier that month. She was 60 years old.

While earning her undergraduate degree at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, Cano spent her junior year at the Université Paris-Sorbonne. She went on to earn a Ph.D. at Yale University.

Dr. Cano joined the department of modern languages and literatures at Case Western Reserve University in 1999. She taught courses on a wide range of language, literature, and culture courses at CWRU, including courses on French cinema and the contemporary novel. Dr. Cano was a member of the Medical Humanities and Social Medicine Advisory Committee at the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Earlier in her career, she taught at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and Virginia Tech.

A highly regarded scholar of French literature and culture, Dr. Cano was the author of Proust’s Deadline (University of Illinois Press, 2006) It won widespread praise for the depth of its research and prose. The book continues to be cited today.
