In Memoriam: Carroll McClure Lewin, 1942-2022

Carroll McClure Lewis, a long-time faculty member at the University of Vermont, died on October 20 in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. She was 79 years old.

A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, her father died in an airplane crash before she was born. Her mother remarried and the family moved to New York.

Dr. Lewis attended Oberlin College in Ohio, graduating in 1965. She received a Ph.D. in anthropology at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. While at Brandeis, she met her first husband, Stephen Pastner. The couple conducted fieldwork together in Baluchistan, a remote region of Pakistan.

Dr. Lewis later joined the faculty at the University of Vermont and taught there for 30 until her retirement in 2001. She helped establish the women’s studies program and served on the advisory boards of the Fleming Museum and the Center for Holocaust Studies.
