University of Georgia Scholar Wins Award From the American Political Science Association

Susan Brodie Haire, a professor in the department of political science in the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia, has been selected to receive the Frank J. Goodnow Award from the American Political Science Association. The award was established in 1996 to honor the outstanding contributions of individuals, groups, and public and private organizations to both the development of the political science profession and the building of the American Political Science Association. The Goodnow Award is named for Frank J. Goodnow, the association’s first president.

The citation for the award read in part: “Professor Haire’s longstanding commitment to service in the profession, impressive for both its breadth and depth, stood out to the awards committee. Her record of service demonstrates a career-long dedication to improving the profession through mentorship, teaching, and service.”

Professor Haire’s research has focused on the U.S. Courts of Appeals, inter-court relations, and the impact of racial and gender diversity of judges on judicial decision-making.  She is the co-author of Diversity Matters. Judicial Policymaking on the U.S. Courts of Appeals (University of Virginia Press, 2015) and Continuity and Change on the United States Courts of Appeals (University of Michigan Press, 2000).

In 2023, Professor Haire will become the first woman to head the department of political science at the University of Georgia. She is president-elect of the Southern Political Science Association.

Dr. Haire is a graduate of the University of Georgia. She holds a master of public administration degree from the University of West Florida and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of South Carolina.
