In Memoriam: Carol Lazzaro-Weis, 1949-2022

Carol Lazzaro-Weis, professor emerita of French and Italian studies at the University of Missouri, died earlier this year in Missouri. She was 72 years old and had suffered from cancer.

After graduating from Philadelphia High for Girls in 1967, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in French language and literature from Pennsylvania State University. She held a master’s degree in French from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in romance languages from the University of Pennsylvania.

During her tenure at the University of Missouri, Professor Lazzaro-Weid taught courses in French and Italian, Afro-Romance studies, women and gender studies, Canadian studies, and Black studies. She chaired the department of modern languages from 2003 to 2005.

Dr. Lazzaro-Weis was the author of From Margins to Mainstream: Feminism and Fictional Modes in Italian Women’s Writings, 1968-1990 (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1993). She served as president of the American Association of Italian Studies from 2009 to 2016.

Professor Lazzaro-Weis retired from teaching in 2017.
