In Memoriam: Sara Suleri Goodyear, 1953-2022

Sara Suleri Goodyear, professor of English emerita at Yale University, died in Bellingham, Washington, on March 20. She was 68 years old.

A native of Karachi, Pakistan, Dr. Goodyear was a graduate of Kinnaird College in Lahore, Pakistan. She earned a  master’s degree in English literature from Punjab University in Pakistan, and a Ph.D. in English from Indiana University.

Dr. Goodyear taught at Williams College in Massachusetts and, for most of her career, at Yale University, beginning in 1983. She was a founding editor of the Yale Journal of Criticism. Professor Goodyear was the author of two books on postcolonial studies, Meatless Days (University of Chicago Press, 1989), which told the story of her early life in Pakistan, and The Rhetoric of English India (University of Chicago Press, 1992). Her teaching and research focused on Romantic and Victorian poetry, Edmund Burke, and postcolonial literature and theory.
