Eight Women Who Have Appointed to Administrative Posts at Colleges and Universities

Susie Tanchel has been appointed vice president of community education at Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts. Dr. Tanchel comes to Hebrew College from Boston’s Jewish Community Day School, where she served as head of school from 2011 through 2020. Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, she moved to Boston in 1988.

Dr. Tanchel holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in ancient Near Eastern and Jewish studies from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Gillian McKnight-Tutein is the new vice president for enrollment administration and student success at the Community College of Denver. Dr. McKnight-Tutein served as the vice president of academic and student affairs and senior academic officer for Front Range Community College in Westminster, Colorado.

Dr. McKnight-Tutein holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Florida International University. She earned a master’s degree in human resources development administration and a doctorate in instructional technology and distance education from Nova Southeastern University.

Jill D. Friedman was named vice president of marketing and communications at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Friedman most recently served eight years as vice chancellor for public affairs at Washington University in St. Louis.

Friedman earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Vermont and an MBA from the Olin School of Business at Washington University.

Lillie A. Burgess was appointed campus minister at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. She is the first woman to lead the campus ministry in the 150-year history of the college.

Dr. Burgess received an undergraduate degree in Bible and church ministries and a master’s degree in Christian education and biblical studies from Columbia International University in South Carolina. She earned a doctoral degree in comparative religion at Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Carolyn Douglas was named regional manager of communications and outreach for Western Governors University. Douglas will guide the strategic direction of the university’s public relations, social media, and local marketing efforts across a nine-state territory, which includes Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Douglas is the founder of Carolyn Douglas Communications, a consulting firm. She worked for more than a decade as a reporter and anchor at KING-TV in Seattle.

Tisha D. Arnold has been named director of communications for Grambling State University in Louisiana. She was the public information officer for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Arnold is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and studied integrated marketing communications at West Virginia University.

Lisa Garvin was appointed chaplain and minister at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, effective October 19. She will be the first woman to serve in the role. A native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Garvin served for eight years as associate dean of the chapel and religious life at Emory University in Atlanta.

Garvin holds a bachelor’s degree in European studies from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. She earned two master’s degrees at Emory University.

Natalie Page was appointed vice president for academic affairs at Danville Community College in Virginia. She has been serving as dean of academic services at South Suburban College in South Holland, Illinois.

Dr. Page is a graduate of Michigan State University, where she majored in advertising and marketing. She holds a master’s degree in instructional design and technology from Governors State University and a doctorate in community college leadership from Northern Illinois University.
