Eight Women Faculty Members Who Are Taking on New Assignments in Higher Education

Judith Flores Carmona was appointed interim director of Chicano programs at New Mexico State University. She is an associate professor in the department of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education at the university. She joined the faculty at New Mexico State University in 2012.

Dr. Flores Carmona holds a bachelor’s degree in human communication with a focus in American studies and a master’s degree in multicultural education from California State University, Monterey Bay. She earned a second master’s degree in educational administration from New Mexico State University and a doctorate from the University of Utah in the sociology of education.

Marilyn Amey, professor of higher, adult and lifelong education and chair of the department of educational administration at Michigan State University, has been appointed interim associate provost for faculty and academic staff development. Dr. Amey joined the faculty at Michigan State in 1997 after teaching at the University of Kansas and Pennsylvania State University.

Professor Amey is a graduate of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, where she majored in elementary and special education. She holds a master’s degree from Ohio State University. Dr. Amey earned a master of public administration degree and a Ph.D. in higher education from Pennsylvania State University.

Laura DeMarco was appointed professor of mathematics at Harvard University. She was the Henry S. Noyes Professor of Mathematics at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Earlier, she taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Chicago.

Professor DeMarco is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she majored in mathematics and physics. She earned a master’s degree in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. in mathematics at Harvard University.

Beth Winkelstein, the Eduardo D. Glandt President’s Distinguished Professor in the department of bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania, was appointed deputy provost at the university. She serves as co-editor of the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering.

Professor Winkelstein is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a Ph.D. in bioengineering from Duke University.

Judith Howard was promoted to full professor of dance ar Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She joined the Carleton faculty in 2007 after teaching in the theater and dance programs at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Professor Howard received a master of fine arts degree in dance performance and choreography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Myrna Perez Sheldon, an assistant professor in the department of classics and world religions and in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program at Ohio University, has been named the new executive director of the university’s Cutler Scholars program.

Dr. Perez Sheldon is a graduate of Westmont College in Santa Barbra, California, where she majored in biology and history. She earned a Ph.D. in the history of science from Harvard University.

Jenna Shim, a professor in the School of Teacher Education at the University of Wyoming, has been given the added duties of associate dean for graduate programs in the College of Education. She joined the university’s faculty in 2009.

Dr. Shim earned a bachelor’s degree in piano performance at California State University and a master’s degree in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music. She holds a master’s degree in reading education and a Ph.D. in language and literacy education from the University at Albany of the State University of New York System.

Terry-Ann Jones was appointed professor of political science and director of Africana studies at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Dr. Jones comes to Lehigh from Fairfield University in Connecticut, where she served as associate professor of sociology and anthropology and was director of the international studies program. She is the author of several books including Sugarcane Labor Migration in Brazil (Palgrave Pivot, 2020).

Dr. Jones is a graduate of York University in Toronto, where she majored in political science and Latin American and Caribbean studies. She earned a Ph.D.at the University of Miami in Florida.
