Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, Appoints Four Women to Endowed Chairs

Mary Simonson was appointed to the Daniel C. Benton ’80 Endowed Chair in Arts, Creativity, and Innovation. She holds appointments in film and media studies and women’s studies and has served as director of film and media studies. Professor Simonson is the author of Body Knowledge: Performance, Intermediality, and American Entertainment at the Turn of the Twentieth Century (Oxford University Press, 2013).

Elizabeth Marlowe was appointed to Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Chair in Liberal Arts Studies. She is an associate professor of art and art history. Her fields of specialization are ancient art, late antiquity, the city of Rome, and Roman imperial monuments. She is the author of Shaky Ground: Context, Connoisseurship, and the History of Roman Art (Bloomsbury, 2013).

Dr. Marlowe is a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She holds a second bachelor’s degree from the University of Cambridge in England. She earned her Ph.D. at Columbia University.

Hélène Julien was named to the Arnold A. Sio Chair in Diversity and Community. She is a professor of romance languages who joined the faculty in 1994. She teaches courses in French grammar and literature, literature from North Africa and its diaspora, women’s studies, and Francophone studies.

Professor Julien is a graduate of Princeton University in New Jersey. She earned a doctorate in comparative literature from the Sorbonne in Paris.

Rebecca Ammerman was named to the Roy D. and Margaret B Wooster Chair. A professor of classics, she joined the faculty at Colgate in 1982. She is the author of The Sanctuary of Santa Venera at Paestum II: The Votive Terracottas (University of Michigan Press, 2002).

Professor Ammerman is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
