In Memoriam: Nancy Ryan Lowitt, 1956-2020

Nancy Lowitt, an assistant professor of medicine who had recently been promoted to senior associate dean for faculty affairs and professional development at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, died late last month from complications of metastatic breast cancer at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She was 64 years old.

A native of Stamford, Connecticut, Dr. Lowitt received her bachelor’s degree in American literature from Middlebury College in Vermont. She graduated from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education with a master’s degree in education and received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Harvard Medical School, New England Deaconess Hospital, and her fellowship in general internal medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

In 1998, Dr. Lowitt joined the department of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She was appointed associate dean of graduate and continuing medical education and added faculty development to her duties in 2005.
