In Memoriam: Mary Elizabeth Hoppe, 1951-2020

Mary Elizabeth Hoppe, a longtime faculty member in the chemistry department at Norwich University, a military college in Northfield, Vermont, died late last month. She was 68 years old.

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Professor Hoppe earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. She completed her graduate work in inorganic/organometallic chemistry at the University of Michigan. She then returned to Minnesota to accept a faculty position at the University of Minnesota — Morris.

Professor Hoppe joined the faculty in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at Norwich University in 1981 and was promoted to full professor in 1995. She taught general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. Her research interests focus on chemical education and active learning.
