Carleton College’s Kim Smith Honored by the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences

Kim Smith, a professor of environmental studies and political science at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, was selected to receive the William R. Freudenburg Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences. Through this award, the association honors members of the profession who also have devoted their lives to strengthening the field by mentoring the next generation of environmental scientists and activists.

Professor Smith is a founding member and past president of the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences. She joined the Carleton faculty in 1999 with a background in political theory, American political institutions and policy, and law. Dr. Smith currently teaches courses in environmental ethics, environmental justice, environmental law and policy, and constitutional law. Prior to coming to Carleton, she served as a visiting associate professor at Princeton University and an assistant professor at Tuskegee University in Alabama.

Dr. Smith is the author of several books including The Dominion of Voice: Riot, Reason and Romance in Antebellum Politics (University of Kansas Press, 1999) and African American Environmental Thought: Foundations (University of Kansas Press, 2008).

Professor Smith holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She earned a juris doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.
